Best is obviously subjective. Most pleasurable car to drive that I've owned was my 2001 Audi A6 avant. It had some electrical gremlins that tarnished the overall enjoyment.

Best car was probably my '73 Mercury Capri. Bought it for $900 and 110k miles. Sold it for $500 and 205k miles. Never had to do anything other than general maintenance to keep it going.

Driving my grandma's New Yorker was a kick when I was a teenager, but I've sailed better-handling boats. :)

The best so far is my neighbour's AMG. It's a few years old, but when it comes to speed, handling, and luxury, there's no 'pick any two' about it. I didn't dare explore its limits in urban traffic, and not least because it wasn't my car, but I didn't find any body roll whatsoever, and hardly a whimper from the tires.

I had both a 124 and a 128... my cousin had X-19's... when they ran, they were fun... they were NOT reliable running cars. But, they did corner well...

I've had 2 124 spiders and one 124 coupe, one 128SL coupe, and a couple of X-1/9's. I just missed out on a brand new X-1/9 in 2002 - a bunch of them ended up in a warehouse after Malcolm Bricklin's commpany (which was importing the 124 and X-1/9 as the Pinninferina and Bertone) went under. They sold on Ebay for original sticker.

All of my Fiats and Alfas were very reliable. Most of the work on them was because I like to modify Italian cars. All of the mechanical injection Alfas I had I converted to dual Weber 40 DCOEs (like the European cars). The Fiats were more expensive to modify, as all parts had to come from Al Consinento's shop in the early days. I still look at nice X-1/9's as a possible commuter car.

Really? They're cute and zippy, but crash protection is pretty much nil. A hard charging bicycle could wipe it out. Don't laugh, I've done that. An old lady in an old beater car flung open her door and I smacked straight into it so hard it wrecked the door and bent some sheet metal. It cost more to fix than it was worth, so it was written off. The bike wasn't much good after that, either, but fortunately it was only my Winter commuter. :)

The best sports car I drove recently was the 2011 Mercedes AMG SLS although it was a pre-production prototype. I do not care too much for the styling but the power, torque, handling and balance of this car was superb. I could not get it out of shape at Laguna Seca because it was very forgiving and easy to recover.

The best luxury car I drove recently was the 2010 Rolls Royce Phantom. Large and commanding a presence wherever it was driven to, the execution of luxury and refinement was of the highest order. Built by BMW, the level of build quality convinced me that this is what Rolls Royce should be. What impressed me was the performance and handling of such a big and heavy car. When pressed hard, it hunkered down and handled tight corners well. In essence it became a BMW. The wine cooler in the rear compartment wasn't bad either.

Next to my 2009 Camry Hybrid, which I absolutely love, my favorite personally owned car was my 1968 Chevy Camaro, 275 horsepower, turbo-fire, four-barrel 327 V8. What a fun car to drive; until my girl friend crashed it, of course! :)

We we got our Buick Regal, at the time, that had been the best car I'd ever driven... and I've driven everything from a VW Bug to a 2.5 ton dump truck.

Now, I really prefer the Prius. Really.

I had a 67 with a 302... it was fun... steering wasn't that good and compared to my Chargers, which were really et cars... mine was taken while we were coming home by a drunken Harley running through a stopsign and hitting us doing 60+ at the passenger front wheel...

Wow, that guy must have looked like hamburger after the crash. The only dilemma, do you use a mop or a shovel to pick up the pieces-parts?

Probably true about the crashworthyness on the X-1/9. I know the car it replaced, the 850 Spider (which I also still love) could be totaled from a light hit on ice. I know, it happened to one I knew.

As for your hit into the door:  How bad were you hurt? I imagine it was YOUR mass, not the bicycles, that did the damage...

Right on! Did you own one? I saw one recently for sale here in Denver and was tempted (well, interested - I couldn't come up with that much money for an old car no matter how much I want one!).

By the time all things are said and done it might be the 2010 Prius!

Until that day it's a tie for me: Honda S2000 - which belonged to my cousin, the best gearbox you'll find anywhere this side of $30K. The other was my old Mitsubishi Evolution - Great car to drive, terrible car to own. 13.7 mpg observed, replacing Brembos pads at only 8,000 miles, just a fussy car to maintain to run at the highest level.

The Evo isn't for people who want a transportation appliance. The reason it achieves such high performance is through the use of (near-)racing spec parts, which is why you change brake pads at 8k, and tires at 12-15k miles, and you add a turbo timer. It's also why so many people turn them into pure race cars. I'm really surprised you got 13.7 though - not including racing the car, I can still get 22mpg (even modified). Did you get a bad tune, or were you just boosting everywhere?
