I went for a oil change and tire rotation (I'm at 15k miles) on my 2009 Prius and the guy suggested I replace both my cabin and engine air filters. They didn't look too bad, but I was wondering at what mileage does Toyota recommend changing them? I can't seem to find that anywhere... Also, is there a recommended store online where I can buy replacement products cheaply or should I get them at the dealer for the best quality? Thanks! John
The cabin and engine air filters are recommended replacements at 30,000 miles (Toyota Parts and Service). However, many people change them sooner. It really depends on your driving conditions and roads you travel.
Thank you so much! Mine look A LITTLE dirty, but not as bad as I thought they could look. Not sure what they should look like when they're due to be changed. Anyone have any ideas?
The cabin air filter can be washed when it's dirty instead of replaced. If it gets holes or rips in it, it's time for a new one. A little bit dirty is fine - you can always vacuum off the debris and stick it back in.
Engine air filter: hold up to sun. If you can't see light passing through, then replace. Cabin air filter: can you stand to breathe through the filter given the dirt on its surface.
I changed both of mine at about 18,000 miles. They were dirty, but not filthy, in my opinion. I've always changed air filters on my vehicles a little sooner than recommended. Seems to me it's a low cost way to keep the engine running efficiently and not put any undo stress on it. Just my way of doing things. I purchased both on Amazon and got free shipping and no tax. Another reason to do it early, I guess. You can wait for the order to arrive and don't have to pay "retail" just because you need it now.
Just one thing: be certain to note which way they were facing when they come out so that you install them facing the right way. It's tempting to install the engine filter upside-down.
Nope, But I went to Home Depot to purchase about 8 feet of 3"vacuum hose Hooked the hose up to the exhaust , then into the car. Tried to gas the suckers out Good for them though, the car runs so clean there wasn't enough exhaust to get em out Just kidding!
The only thing worse than a live mouse in your Prius, is a dead one stuck somewhere you can't find it...
