Car rolls forward after stopping

The car is a 2010, so it is certainly not old, and it is far from stupid. I would look into driver error! I have done this once or twice, but only because I forgot to push either P or the start button.

 

I always apply the E-brake eveytime I get out of the car... the DVD that came in the manual recomended that we do that.

 

I have noticed this as well. The car rolls fwd slightly(few inches) even after hitting the P button to engage parking. When I showed this to a local Toyota tech he claimed it was "normal" for hybrids???

I am not convinced!

Let's see there's also that braking glitch over bumps...

It is normal. The Prius uses a gear-like parking pawl to lock the drivetrain when in park. This gear-like system is very robust, but it does introduce a small amount of play in the parking pawl. What you feel is the play being taken up.

As others have said, if this play is an issue, use the parking brake.

My Lexus does this when I don't apply the parking brake. I always apply the parking brake and don't have this issue.

 

Our Kia van moves/rolls just as much as our Prius when in park. No way is it an inch or two either...

 

Every car or truck i have ever owned or drove did this. Some trucks/cars i can push 6 inches when they are in park.

2. I would also sugest using your parking brake, it will prevent this from happing and also save a tiny bit of wear on the PSD and may prevent your car from rolling away and hurting someone if some how the park failed.

 

mine seems to roll in excessively, maybe 2 inches or more...much more noticeable than any other automatics I've driven.

Is there a way to tighten this pawl play?

You are getting way down in the weeds here.

Other than self-inflicted damage to the parking pawl, what possible
significance can this have in the real world? When you're parking, you
can't even see the clearance between the front bumper and any
obstruction.

So what, is Toyota supposed to recall the car and move the engine bay
to the rear of the car a la Porsche to make those 2 inches meaningful?

If the self-discipline required to use the parking brake whenever the
car is parked is overly much to expect, then the next-best solution is
to tighten up or replace the nut behind the steering wheel.

 

I seriously hope you are joking....

For whatever reason, the delay between putting it into park, taking you foot off the brake, and feeling the final settling of the car is delayed - especially if you are parked very close to level so the car rolls slowly. So you are tying to open the door and suddenly you feel the minor stopping sensation.

It is not a big deal. You get used to it. And it is not a safety issue. If moving the car 2 inches causes a safety issue, you are parking too close to danger.



On a side issue, almost every car I had have a parking brake that is really weak. If you don't put the car in park but in neutral, the car will surely roll away by itself. Can't they make the parking brake stronger? It would seem safer if you live in, say, a hilly place like SF.

 

Thats weird are you applying the parking brake hard enuff?

 

Or maybe they are not adjusted properly? I don't have any problems here in SF with either drum or disc rear parking brakes.

Very simple

USE THE PARKING BRAKE!

The parking brake is to be used EVERY time you park the car. Its not just for emergencies...its not just for hills. Its for PARKING. The PARKING BRAKE. In many states...its the law actually.

If you use the parking brake the vehicle will not move when you release the service brake because the parking brake will not allow the vehicle to settle back on the parking prawl.

This is true in EVERY VEHICLE. Every little thing about your Prius is not a god awful death sentance.

 

My car does this occasionally, mostly when on a hill. Solution: parking brake, it has worked every time.
