Yea ... remember when hybrids 1st started picking up steam? "Big deal, only 1/2 of 1% are hybrids" ... then later, "big deal, they're only 1% of car sales" ... then a little later, big deal, they're only 1.5% ... er ... 2% ..." etc. Now, Look what's selling the MOST in Japan. Was the "big deal ..." comment dumb or what? In stead of building an equal, the status quo meant you just said, "big deal ..."

From what I understand, pretty much every manufacturer has had reports of unintended acceleration from cars they've made... it's rare, but there are a lot of cars. The problem for Toyota is that they were getting about twice as many reports. So, I guess that Toyota owners should be twice as concerned as a gm owner. Of course the press wants us to be terrified while everyone else thinks they're completely safe... idiots.
And I wouldn't be surprised if gm is behind some of the press, some of the trolls, or even some of the regulatory body's actions. After all, gm is a government corporation.

43000 people die in car accidents annually
20000 die of the flu annually
    120 die in plane crashes
19 die of unattended acceleration (in a decade) in Toyota cars

Sort of puts it in perspective. I’m much more likely to get killed in a regular car crash than from a stuck accelerator. I think it’s all mass hysteria. I don’t think Toyota deserved this kind of negative news.

The poster angeleno revived the 3 years old thread. His first post was on 1/28/2010. He revived this thread a day later (he joined?). All his posts were about unintended acceleration.

    I do not know....

I haven't posted on here in quite some time. I just wanted to check on here to see if anything was being done about the floor mat recall. I personally had my Prius go out of control more than once because of the floor mat; I removed it long before the recall and solved the problem. I thought it was just common sense. I am a bit perturbed that my carpets have to get so nasty though because we cannot have the aux floor mats.

By the way, this is not the first car I've had a runaway with before. The first was a GM, quite awhile ago.

Now they're saying there is a potential braking issue?

The braking issue applies to third generation Prius, not second generation.

YEP! Time to stock up on extra factory carpet mats.
Better yet just fill the whole cabin with turned in mats for added crash protection.:lol::lol:

    Nice investigative work....:thumb:

No doubt people are trying to create a stir. Even on the local news here in NYC last night, someone with a 05 Prius was interviewed about her brakes saying "Well, it feels like I'm losing a little control of the car, but it's not frightening and I don't feel like I've lost the brakes."

Me yelling at TV: "That's called TRACTION CONTROL...look it up!"

But there is blood in the water for the US car manufacturers. I can't blame them for trying to oust the king.

Now with that said, if there really has been a cover up of the problem by Toyota - if they KNEW about these failing brakes and/or wielded their corporate power to make the NHTSA ignore evidence, they should be found liable and punished. I love my Prius but if a company is involved in wrong doing I have no problem seeing them punished for it.

Again, I think you'd have a hard time "putting it in perspective" for the family of those 19 if Toyota knew about it and willfully ignored it. Seems there is more evidence coming up that the NHTSA ignored reports that these unintended accelerations were not simply caused by a "stuck mat" at all times. (saw this article just this morning.)

And why exactly did they side with Toyota in the face of evidence to the contrary?? I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I think they have to choose, based upon predetermned criteria, which complaints are serious enough to investigate and take action on. It could be the number of validated complaints were lower than their trigger point for action.
There has to be a ton of complaints that are not valid coming in. Kind of like the high volume of calls we get for speedometer calibration checks right after the police have set up a speed check and given out a lot of tickets.

As I've said previously, this issue will hopefully begin a serious discussion about what we realistically expect from equipment manufacturers.

We cannot expect manufacturers to jump at one report when they have sold hundreds of thousands (or millions) of their product. So where does that line get drawn? 10? 100? 1,000?

I doubt this discussion will actually take place, though, due to the political factors surrounding the issue.

Sacramento local TV channel reported a 2008 Prius had an accelerator problem on a Southern California freeway yesterday. Speeds up to 90 MPH were reported. No report of a cause yet.

It's almost like someone started trolling the board for old threads.

Perhaps we need a "sticky" with suspected Trolls. Most trolls will likely have Jan/Feb 2010 sign-up dates, however, there may be a others.

    Quick question, quick answer...

Has anyone actually tested "Push Start button for 3 seonds" while care is accelerating?

Has anyone tested moving the transmission from D to N whjile in motion?

I did the first but while idling. Was afraid it might leave me stranded and where to you find a safe place to test

Hope to hear from abunch of you

The news has been about the 2008 Prius with a stuck gas pedal going 94 MPH on the San Diego freeway. CHP helped the guy stop.

(about reviving old threads...i'm happy the guy did a search and not just start a new thread)
