The good news is that my Prius is not included, but the bad news is that my Avalon is.

This news isn't that bad. You're getting a new accelerator mechanism for free.

The post should probably go under Other Cars as it seems few, if any, Toyota hybrids are affected.

    This recall can't be all.
Lexus vehicles exhibit similar issue, and yet, no Lexus vehicles are currently included in this recall. I expect more to come.
Prius may end up be included.
I can't wait to get a new gas pedal for peace of mind.

Don't worry there's a very good reason. All the vehicles in this 2.3 MM unit recall are made here in the US. No Japanese-made vehicles seem to be involved. It will go by VIN.

    2002 - 2009 Highlander ( made in Japan ) NOT involved
2010 Highlander ( made in Indiana ) IS involved
    1995-2008 RAV4 ( made in Japan ) NOT involved
    2009-2010 RAV4 ( made in Woodstock ) IS involved
Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Avalon...only made in N America ARE involved
Corolla & Camry, probably depends on the VIN

But...No Yaris', No Scions, No Prius', No 4Runners, No FJs, No LCs, No Lexus'....all made in Japan.

I think the post should stay here, because many people, myself included, are immediately concerned their Prius may be affected.

This was the first place I looked and I think important things should be easy to find. Entire families have died in their cars because of this.

I wouldn't mind a new pedal mechanism, so I hope they are guilted into it eventually. Now that the car is paid for I'd prefer to keep the maintenance costs down and enjoy the 'raise'. I don't think it's cheap to replace that on my own...

I am so happy they are finally bringing this issue out into the light of day so it can be dealt with. I feel bad for all the folks who have experienced this very scary happening and then treated like they were crazy. Unfortunately, there were disparaging remarks made about these people on this forum.

Notice that this recall has nothing to do with Prius' of any kind or any age. In fact it has nothing to do with Japanese-made vehicles of any kind or any age. Which disparaging remarks?

It also has nothing to do with uncommanded engines surges or acceleration. From the description, it appears that the throttle may stick at the lowest point to which the driver pressed it, but doesn't go beyond that on its own.

Was this particular problem ever discussed here?

Snippet from http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recall...rieve Recalls&prod_id=782773&PrintVersion=YES that includes a bit more info.
    From Recalls Summary
Documents so far are at NHTSA ODI - Recalls Documents. Usually, when the repair campaigns have started, clicking on Document Search after bringing up a recall from Office of Defects Investigation - Safety Recalls will show the letters to the owners, dealers, more correspondence and the repair procedure.

I can certainly understand how a sticking gas pedal could give the perception of a surging engine or unmanned acceleration. I do not claim to be an expert in this area, but if the gas pedal gets stuck in a certain position while I am accelerating, the car will continue to accelerate until it reaches the speed directly related to the position of the stuck gas pedal. This would give the unsuspecting driver the feeling that the car was accelerating on its own, which it would be.

More good info Toyota knew of sticky-throttle problem late last year - USATODAY.com. Be sure to read the rest of the story and not just my quotes.

The 09-10 Pontiac Vibe, twin of the Toyota Matrix and built at the Fremont, CA NUMMI plant is also affected.

MY PRIUS GAS PEDAL STICKS - NO FLOOR MATS IN THE CAR. Found that out the hard way, when I accelerated aggressively (jammed the gas pedal to the floor) in order to merge onto a freeway. Engine raced in full throttle and I had to bring it under control through a combination of brakes and shifting. This is a very dangerous issue, and unless you get it fixed, you just need to be prepared to deal with it (don't panic - just apply brakes and prepare to shut car off).

Then get it fixed so that it doesn't stick! Complaining about it won't fix it!

My Prius seems ok for now. I do know someone with a Tundra who remarked his truck's accelorator has always been sticky (as in staying partially depressed) for as long as he has owned it. Since this is his first Toyota truck and he purchased it to tow a camper, he thought it had to do with the power of the vehicle. Well looks like he will get it fixed and have to re-learn how to drive it.
P.S. Not once did his car "run away" on him.
