17" OEM wheels on a Solar Roof Prius with the factory fogs added would be the coolest Prius in terms of look. If money is no object, you can swap out the headlight housing for the LEDs as well.

 

If I'm to offer a body shop $100,000 to swap them out, I'm sure they can figure out a way faster than you can say "Hawkmoon77."

 

I went to parts.com and could not find parts for the 2010 model Prius. Seems that the drop down menu only goes to 2009?

 

I'm from LA-Cali, It cost me $4k from the dealer adding the 17" (5-star) OEM factory wheels with tires, installation, balance, etc. Car was purchased June 2009 after 2 months waiting for the car. We refuse to pay over $35k for 2010 model V. My girl really dislike the 14" stock wheels that came with model II even though I honestly think we overpaid for the 17" wheels.

Best case - It looks like Toyota OEM 17" wheels + tires will run you about $2K going the parts.com (wheels) + tirerack.com route (tires). Not too appealling.

Doesn't Toyota realize that the dorkmobile 15" wheelcovers are costing them more than a few sales. A lot of people want a sunroof and many actually don't like leather for both personal (environmental) reasons, the extra cost, and it get's hot and sticky in the summer. So a package III with a nice set of reasonably priced and sporty alloy wheels would be very desireable. Why not 16" wheels that look identical to the 17" wheels on the V?

 

Just don't forget you get a gas mileage hit when going from 15" to 17" OEM's. They say it's a couple mpg different. I know I average only about 46.5mpg.

Another thing is the turning radius is a tiny bit larger.

I got my V bacause of the adv tech package (radar controlled cruise control is the greatest!), but I actually would have liked the 15's and cloth as well...

 

If you're getting 46.5mpg then either there's something wrong with your driving technique or you trip is less than 5 miles. I have the same car as you and I routinely get 55-58mpg. 52mpg on a bad (cold) day. 62-65mpg on a good day. My trips are minimum 7.5miles.

I'm still looking for a set of good cloth seat covers. So far I'm loving the cruise too.

 

My commute is 37 miles each way and 90% rural highway and I'm on the first highway within a mile of my house. That's 46.5 calculated btw -- the display is usually just over 50mpg.

There could well be something I could do in my driving to get better, I'm only up to about 3500 miles with it. ECO mode doesn't help, and I already have my tires inflated to 44/42.

 

I have a Prius III and asked Toyota corporate if such option was available or possible. They recommended against increasing the size of the tires. There was a separate post stating that the car may not be "designed" to handle a 17-inch tire. The 2010 Prius V (top end with 17-inch tires) must be different than the rest of the line?

I'm not trying to be critical of you here, but a couple of things you stated confuse me.

First of all, I don't think the turning radius would be any different between the 2 different wheel sizes because I thought one of the factors governing the turning radius was based on the car's wheel base. The wheel base doesn't change when you put on a different diameter tire because the wheel base is still directly under the car's axle centerlines. However, I will concede that if the larger diameter rims change the longitudinal centerline locations of the tires then the car's tracking width may change & that MIGHT affect the turning radius. Does anyone else agree or disagree with this paragraph??---(I'd like to hear some expert opinions).

The other thing is the MPG hit---I don't understand that. With a 2 inch greater rim diameter I don't know how much of a change that would make on the tire diameter (actually the only factor to change the equation would be the difference in the rolling radius of the 2 different size tires for the 2 different size rims, times 2). In theory, if the tire diameter changed the same 2 inches as the rim diameter, then for each wheel rotation the car would cover 6.28 inches more with the bigger rims (2" x 3.14 = 6.28") or a foot extra for every 2 wheel rotations (but I realize that a 2" difference in rim size may not equate to a 2" difference in tire diameter).

Since the speedometer & odometer (on older/other cars at least) were/are driven by a gear at the rear of the transmission (but the Prius may get its info from the wheel speed sensors), you would never notice an increase in vehicle speed over what is indicated (but a police officer with radar might) because even though the engine speed/wheel speed remains the same, with the larger rims/tires, more distance is traveled in the same amount of time, however a portable GPS (or the car's own nav system---if you have that option) would tend to indicate your higher true speed (from the satellite info). If you ever check your odometer accuracy from the highway mile markers, with the larger rims/tires, your car's odometer will register a lower figure than the measured mile (again because you would travel a greater distance for the same number of engine/wheel rotations---you would get to the end of the measured mile before the odometer says you have traveled a mile). Anyone disagree here?

I'm not really sure why but Toyota lists it as different on the official specs. 36 ft. versus 34.2 ft. for all other models.

Again I can't tell you why for sure, I'm new to this stuff, but I do know the rims are heavier and the tires wider and that is the difference. (higher weight and friction) There are many threads that mention this here in Priuschat, the best info I found is in:

I'm pretty sure the outside diameter of the tire is pretty close between the 15's and 17" rims...
