Weight of the 2010 17 inch OEM Rims

Not to hijack ur thread but while we're on the subject of the 17" wheels, does anyone know what the offset is as well? I will be looking to go with an aftermarket wheel probably once the first set of tires are near done unless I come across a large sum of money before that. I'd just like to start looking at what my options may be. Any help on both of these subjects would be greatly appreciated. Who knows John, depending on what I find and cost I may have mine for sale sometime after my car gets here.

17inch:11.0kg 17X7J PCD=100 offset=50 5 holes

Hmm, the 17" wheel in particular seems to be extremely heavy at 24 pounds.

At 16 pounds even the 15" wheel seems reasonable.

A quick search at Tirerack shows a ton of 17" wheels in the 16lb range or less. Seems like it'd be a no brainer to go to some light aftermarket wheels that will improve acceleration and fuel economy.

 

There is room for after-market rims. Can Rays make a lighter aerodynamic 17" rim?

 

Doesn't that seem abnormally heavy for a wheel designed to go on the Prius?

Of course, the amazing thing to me is that I've been able to get pretty good mileage so far -- basically 56 MPGs for around 700 miles. Most of my time (not my miles, just the time) have been short-trip ventures, which does not give me the opportunity for real high MPG experiences.

I can't see spending the money right now to replace these brand-new rims with something else that is a few pounds lighter, though I really wonder what it would do to my mileage.

 

Before judging the weight of the rim alone, with a different profile, what is the weight difference if adding the weight of the tires do? Is the difference as substantial? That may be a better judgement, no?

 

The weight of the combined wheel and tire truly is what matters most, so I'd agree the better comparison is between the stock 17 w/ Toyo Proxes A20s (my tire) vs. a lighter weight 17 with another (or same, I suppose) tire. Even with the same tire, the percent change will not be as great.

To go a bit further: We may need to know the weight distribution, as well, because the force required to change the angular velocity (or momentum) is not insignificant. I don't know that the weight distribution around the wheel has as much effect during braking as during turning, or even acceleration.

 

So, you are using the Scion wheels on an 08? Do you think they will work ok on a 2010? I have a new set and am thinking about putting snow tires on them, or even switching them out and putting the snow tires on the OEM's. I've got the 17" V on order.

 

I don't know that it such a simple match. You may need to check the offsets. I suggest you just call your dealer to find out, because they'd be familiar with the Scion rims.

 

If anyone is still interested, the weight of the 17" wheel with a Michelin Pilot Primacy 215/45 fitted is 43.8 pounds.

Does anyone know what is the weight distribution of the car i.e. what weight on the front axle and what weight on the rear axle?

 

That's a heavy wheel/tire combo.

My Centerline 17x7 with Kumho Ecsta ASX 215/45/17 weigh 37-38lbs. The stock 2005 15' wheels with Integrity tires were 31.5lbs. So some could probably benefit by going with a lightweight aftermarket 17" wheel rather than the factory unit.

What is the meaning of the offset. Does it mean that the 17 inch rims and the 15 inch rims are interchangable? Is the difference is offset significant?

 

An offset is one of wheel dimension standard.

On the Gen3 Prius, the factory 17 inch rims and the 15 inch rims are interchangeable.
Other offset wheels are not confirmed yet for Gen3 Prius.

Had one of my winter wheels off yesterday and took the chance to weigh it - it was just under 38 pounds.

That's a 15" x 6.5" alloy wheel fitted with a Continental Winter Contact TS830 195/65 R15 91T

 

One other option is to slap on some OEM Scion tC rims. I don't have factual data to back it but they do appear to be lighter than the P-V stock rims.

I've seen plenty of Gen2 Prius and Corollas around town go with that, but not a Gen3 yet.
