I just hit 5k and called up the dealer I bought my car from, Lassen in Albany Or., because I thought I remembered something about the first oil change being a freebie.

After hearing about the new 10k interval I was tickled thinking that I wouldn't have to pay for a change until 15k, THEN the dealer told me I had 3 free oil changes coming! That means I won't have to pay for one until I reach 35k miles!!!!!

I was in today and not only was my change free, but they used the correct oil and washed it too!!!!

    I think I love them.

Is this a common or standard deal that I just didn't pick up on or did I some how really luck out?

No freebies at my dealer and they want $120 to change the oil and rotate the tires.

Change your mailing address from Woodside to somewhere in east San Jose and maybe they will give you a break. (Even if you have worked hard all your life, earned every penny that you ever made, and wisely invested your money - nobody is going to give you a break with a Woodside, CA address.)

I really don't mean to be cruel....

My last new car was a BMW 528. As I recall we did not have to pay anything for maintenance for the first 50,000 miles (except for a new set of tires).

Just got the "Express Maintenance" in Sacramento yesterday... $94 for the oil change with tire rotation, including a fluid top-off and brake inspection. I was at around 7000 miles since my previous service. I was thrilled to login this morning to read that Toyota had made the 10k official! WooHoo!

$94 for an oil change is pricey. You can skip the tire rotation: when the front pair wear out move the rear pair to the front and buy a new pair for the rear. Save more by changing the engine air filter and cleaning or replacing the cabin air filter yourself. It's very easy.

Wow, sounds like a good dealer.

You "assume" they put the right oil in based on your invoice. They probably did. Good dealers wash cars after service. Our Lexus dealer washes, vacuums, and does the inside of the windows. Haven't had the Prius serviced yet.

So, your first oil change was free AND you get 3 more ... or 2 more?

10k changes with good synthetics are fine. I always worry (at least a little bit) if they're really using good synthetics. For my BMW, I do my own with Amsoil. IF I had anyone other than me do it, I'd bring the Amsoil with me and insist on watching. I like to watch (OK movie buffs, what movie was that line from?).

Our Toyota dealer has this Auto-For-Life program. They warranty the power train (ICE and tranny included) for as long as you own the car (no mileage or age limit) as long as you have it serviced by them at the manufacturer recommended intervals. No up-front cost. Probably pretty worthless unless you drive 100k per year.

I don't think they offer that anymore.

Doesn't surprise me. Business attitudes have really changed here in U.S. in the last several years (and not for the better). Instead of getting a one-price package with amenities included as part of the package, businesses think that they are being smart by nickel and diming their customers. (The financial services industry and airline industry, are taking this behavior to the extreme.) To me, it is so irritating that I have conscientiously avoided flying commercially, eliminated a number of credit cards, and reduced the number of banks that I do business with.

Where can I find information on changing the engine air filter? Nothing on engine air filter is mentioned in the do-it-yourself section of the manual.

I need a smiley that says "Stay on tangent!!!"

I've done similar. Got a notice from a department store card that I opened a few months ago announcing that they are going to start charging me for monthly billing.... I will be stopping by the store today to cancel the card.

He told me I have three total so two more.

I do trust that they put in the correct oil. Why would they give me the freebies, go to the extra work to give me car wash ( in the rain no less) if customer service wasn't a priority?

Champion Toyota in Austin has free oil and filter changes for as long as you own the car (original owner). It is hard to take advantage of as they are on the other side of town, take hours to perform the service, and they try to hard sell you on more services when you take it in. I have to take a half day off work to get it done there.

Yeah, I didn't find anything on that either. I was a previous Acura owner and the owner's manual had more info relevant to DIY than the toyota manual that came with prius. I am a little disappointed with toyota owner's manual.

Liberty Toyota offers to wash the car as part of the service visit. I decline as the car doesn't need any help picking up scratches.

Both our new Prii cam with a free Toyota Classic prepaid maintenance program (3 oil changes, 19 point inspection and car wash over 1 year). I just had the first oil change done on 'Whitey' yesterday with 1350 mile to get the break in oil out of it. They washed the car and checked tire pressure, services I did not want. We hand wash the cars, it was cleaner before it came out of their car wash, and they removed 6 PSI front and 4 PSI rear of Nitro from my tires, but that's my fault for not telling them not to touch the tires or wash it. When I checked my account on Toyota Owners Online service record, they had recorded the milage at 1852 instead of 1352, so between my over sights and their input mistakes... I called this afternoon and had them note the account on both cars 'no washes/ no tire adjustments' and change the mileage record online.

You mean the oil change 2010 Prius - do it yourself thread? That's for engine oil filter, right? I'm asking about engine air filter.
