Edmunds is reporting (in a now removed article) that the hybrid concept being announced on Monday in Detroit will be a Scion iQ Hybrid. According to Edmunds' Inside Line, the iQ Hybrid will be released in a five-door hatchback and sedan body style. The hatchback will go on sale in the US first, sometime in 2011. With a combination 1.5 liter engine and electric motor, the car will produce 100-120 horsepower total. That should lead to about a 60 MPG average. Price? Rumors peg it under $15,000. It's kind of odd to me that they aren't branding it with the Prius name, but apparently the iQ Hybrid is seen as a last-ditch effort to keep Scion alive. We'll see how it works out. Another example of Toyota listening to what customers want and delivering. Looking forward to learning more on Monday!

Very interesting...this could have a place in my family. Get rid of the wife's old '98 Altima, give her my '08 Camry (non-hybrid) and me get this.

And the Scions are designed to customize, so that could put some hurting on the mileage, but give opportunities to bring in custom audio, etc, a bit easier.

The Insight sales will tank for sure.

    60MPG for $15k or 41MPG for $20k?

Well I guess you did your part Danny by keeping mum on the subject but Edmunds couldn't keep their yaps shut, aye?

They're not winning any friends IMO.

That's interesting. Shouldn't be long before the Scion Evolution guys get a hold of one resulting in some interesting mods.

Yeah, I couldn't figure that one out, either. I'm guessing Edmunds doctored a photo to add the hybrid badge. It looked really stretched out when you blow it up. I haven't found a 5-door version of the iQ yet.

Edit: Yep, here's the original photo:

If I were a car designer, I won't place 5 doors on the IQ size vehicle.

Me neither. What's the point? No one can sit back there comfortably, can they? I'm not familiar with the car but it looks like there wouldn't even be seats in the back.

I'm curious to see the pics of the actual hybrid. If it's that size then I couldn't have gotten it anyway since there's not enough room for two 60lb dogs in the back.

Yes, I think as a 5 door it's incredibly interesting. If it's as pictured, it looks like a Hybrid alternative to a Smart Car.

    I'll wait until Monday...

Perhaps the rear doors can be smaller and open rearward (like on pickup trucks with extended cab)?

I think it's about marketing this vehicle and not about a need to save Scion. Scion is marketed to and viewed by younger people (high school, college, and others that want to be part of that crowd) as cool and hip. By putting a Scion badge on this vehicle, it will be perceived by younger people as cool and hip. Additionally, if the ~15K price tag is accurate, it will match up with the budget of this demographic.

Certainly glad to see other high MPG vehicles come to market.

My only concern is the safety in such a small car.

I can't wait to see the 5 door photos when available.

That may peak my interest more.....

And we thought the Prius was small?? :)

The current production iQ is a 3+1 seater. It means it can seat 3 adults comfortably and the +1 is a child seat behind the driver (because there isn't enough footroom). The passenger side has more footroom because the front seat is placed slightly forward compared to the driver (thanks to a super compact A/C compressor unit and a small pouch that's in place of a standard glovebox). It's quite innovative because a lot of what they learn from this vehicle will be placed into other small vehicles such as the Yaris thus helping increase interior room without increasing exterior dimensions.

    Wouldn't a 5-dr make the iQ a tad longer?

Because they're too lazy to PS the Scion badge in. It's sold as the Toyota iQ in Europe and Japan. When it comes over here, they're planning to sell it as a Scion (both regular and hybrid version)

Good question. Maybe Toyota has a trick up their sleeve planned for Monday. I honestly don't know anything yet (and what I will find out this weekend will be embargoed until Monday morning).
