SmartKey not unlocking rear door or hatch

We are just going to have to agree to disagree. But even in your scenario they are still painting the spoiler, whether they hang it and paint it when the car is being painted or whether "painting in black separately".

Toyota admitted one of the goals moving forward with the new Prius was to reduce production costs. Seems easy to me that logically the Generation 2's had color matching spoilers and "magically" now the 3rd Generation all have one single generic spoiler, that it was a cost cutting measure. I find it hard to believe that behind the scenes someone would say, " You know, it's going to cost a little more, but let's make all the spoilers look the same".

But it's not a big deal to me one way or the other. I honestly like the color matched spoilers better. On a Black Generation 3 or On the Blizzard White Generation 3 I think the Generic looks good. On all the others I'd personally like a color matching spoiler. But it's not a make or break issue, just an area inwhich I think Toyota cut costs. If you want to think a one spoiler fits all was NOT a cost cutting measure...I have no behind the scenes connections I can't prove it costs more or less for either...but personally I like color matching better.

 

Actually that feature is programmable by the owner, dealer does not have to do that one. Check your owners manual.

 

Someone should revisit the manual. It is programmable by owners who have the smart access key with entry function i.e. Prius IV/V owners like you. It is not programmable by owners who have the smart key without entry function i.e. Prius II/III owners like the OP and me; hence, we need to go to the dealer to have this done.

 

Hi--No, actually, the earlier post is accurate when it says the following: "Ok, to have it unlock all the doors when you touch the drivers door handle your do so by holding both buttons on the key fob while inside the vehicle for 5 seconds give or take."

I just now did this on my III, and it worked fine.

 

My wife doesn't like this feature that the car unlocks itself if you have the key in your pocket and approach the car. Is it possible the disable this? We asked the sales guy and he said that it can't be done. But I think there should be a way to do this. Thoughts?

 

It doesn't actually unlock the car when you approach it.

The SKS will arm itself when it detects the key fob near one of the sensors (i.e. the driver's door and, on the models IV and V, the passenger's door and rear hatch). Once the system is armed, if you touch the sensor on the door handle, it will unlock the doors you selected. For the driver's door, you can either have it unlock only the driver's door (which is the default), or you can change it to unlock all doors. For the passenger's door and the rear hatch (only on the models IV and V), when you touch the sensor it unlocks all doors.

But, again, you have to actually touch the sensor to unlock the doors. Just approaching the car only turns on the interior lights and prepares to unlock the doors.

 

Well, the sales guy did a demo. I had the key in my pocket and came pretty close to the car. He was standing near the driver door and opened the door for me. My wife is worried that she may come too close to the car without intending to open the door and then leave without actually locking it again. Will the car lock itself if I leave without locking it again?

 

The car won't be unlocked until you put your hands on the handle. So if you get closer but do not touch the door, the car should not be unlocked.

 

I don't think that's true. Today I was waxing my car and the doors kept unlocking when I got quite close to the handle. My wife's Lexus had a problem with not being sensitive enough and the Service Manager told her to replace the batteries in her remote because he had several people whose doors unlocked whenever they got within a few feet of the handle.

BUT, I thought I remember reading that the door will relock if it is not opened within a certain time. Maybe a minute or two? It should be easy to test that.

 

Even so, waxing the car is not the same as just walking nearby without touching the car.
I wonder how many people were just assuming the car was unlocking because the interior lights turned on when they got near the car.

 

While the decision to put non color-coded spoiler on non-Solar Roof Prius may have been a cost cutting measure, it's designed to coordinate with the Solar Roof look. In fact, Japan sells color-coded Gen 3 spoiler as an accessory. It'd be a cool mod here if you have a non-SR Gen 3 (except black of course).

 

That's interesting. But if that logic was true, and not primarily a cost cutting measure you'd have color coded spoilers on all the non-solar roof Prius. From a #'s standpoint, they still sell far more non-solar roof Prius. I don't buy the logic that Toyota would coordinate the entire Prius line based on The Solar Roof Package and then just decide without "savings" involved, to employ it on ALL 2010 Prius.

Even if I owned a solar roof I think I'd still want a color matched spoiler...but I'd have to take a closer look.

I agree it's a cost cutting measure, in favor of the SR. Just like the dummy fogs in favor of the V.

It'd break up the flow and look disconcerting.

 

Yes, it will. At least mine did. I tried it last night and after about a minute if you haven't opened a door, the doors locked again.

 

Thanks Joe. Now that I've got the car and reading the manual, I can verify them. This is from the manual:

Security feature
If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after the vehicle is unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.

 

I see a lot of references of 'Mechanical Keys' in the manual in case the wireless key is not working. Did anyone get a 'mechanical key'? I didn't.

dzongrila, you should update your profile. It shows you driving an "other non-hybrid", which is confusing when you ask questions about the Prius.
