My wife's 06' Rav 4 makes this "knock" noise which seems to be coming through the steering column when she turns her wheel. It almost always happens when making a left hand turn, and usually happens when turning right. I can only describe it as a quick knock sound. Has anyone had a similar problem in thier Prius or perhaps a Rav? I need help. -Todd
Does it make the noise while the vehicle is moving or can it do it when stopped? If is only makes the noise while moving then I would say cv joint is failing. If it does it every time that you turn the steering wheel moving or stopped then it could be anything from the turn signal indicator, steering knuckle needing lubricant, or even the steering rack.
I'm not sure if it makes the noise while in park....I'll have to check that out. I know for sure it makes it while driving. Either way, sounds like I will have to call up the dealer. Thanks for the input.
CV joint. Check the rubber wrap over the joint and make sure there's lubricant in there. What typically happens is that the rubber is ripped and the lubricant leaks out and you drive the car with the joint bone dry. That causes damage to the ball bearings within the joint, and if that's the case, the joint itself might need to be replaced.
