Working on 70k miles, new to me 2005 Prius. Here's what I want to know and what happened.

How do I reset apparent bogus master malfunction indication?

Following instructions in a Bentley manual to reinitialize headlight level, master warning light came on (including beeps through speakers and flashing warning on MFD). Here's what I did before this happened. Reset maintenance reminder light after oil change. Followed instructions for reinitializing headlight level (because I felt headlight aim was too low). Only thing that might have been abnormal about my procedure was that I had the driver's door open during the procedure or the Bentley instructions are incorrect.

How do I reset malfunction indication?

Thank you , please, over and out!

Assuming that the code isn't real, I believe you may be able to reset by disconnecting the negative terminal on the aux (12V) battery for a few minutes.

OK, tried that for a good 5 minutes. No change. Error message still present. Still seeking advice.

Any chance you have (or know someone who has) a Scanguage so you can see what the code is? I think you might be able to clear it with a Scangauge too.

Had a local shop with a SnapOn scanner hookup and did not get any codes even though 2 warning lamps and a beeper were going off. Headed to the dealer an hour away. Left the car, rented one of their Corollas. Did some more research while they had my car. Went back to get it next day, they got over $100 from me for diagnosis. "Needs new HID lamp leveler sensor". Yes, around $350 for the part alone. Since they didn't have it in stock I had another day to think. I crawled under, removed the sensor, dissected it and was almost fooled into thinking it was fine until I tried to drop the springs out. 2 were stuck and corroded where I couldn't see the corrosion just one or two coils from the bottom of the spring well. I cleaned it all up real nice and pretty (I'm pretty sure the springs and contacts are gold clad), reassembled (used dielectric grease at the socket as I am pretty sure the moisture was entering there) and performed the reinitialization once again. This time I became very happy in my Prius sole. The warnings all cancelled and things are now back to normal. I am posting this now for informational purposes but will go back and thank individuals that provided the good information to save me around $400!

    :D:D:D!HAPPY NEW YEAR!:D:D:D

Technically, aiming is different than auto-leveling which is the system I was dealing with. According to the Bentley manual which covers 2004-2009 you put the car in the not-ready-to-drive mode by pushing "Start" twice with the brake pedal NOT depressed. Leave the headlamp switch turned off during the entire procedure. Then jumper terminals #4 to #8 on the Diagnostic connector below the steering column (this is a "stand on your head" , flashlight-in-hand, possibly strong-reading-glasses-required, maneuver). A paper clip works fine as a jumper. Then, use the headlight switch stalk to "flash" the headlamps on (by pulling the stalk toward the sterring wheel) at least 3 times slowly. 1 second on, 1 second off and so forth. If everything goes right, reinitialization occurs on the 3rd flash, all warning lights return to normal and the levelling system is reinitialized. Voila!
Finally, it is obvious that the leveling system was never working as long as I owned the car (Aug 09 to present and about 10k miles) without setting any coeds or giving any other indications other than lousy lighting of the road ahead at night. Bought it as a Certified used Toyota. Excuse given by the Toy service man was, "We just check that lights are all working. We don't check headlight aim or level as part of the Certification."

I nearly forgot! I'd advise anyone who thinks they might have a HID auto-leveling problem against reinitializing the system. If the sensor is bad, the procedure will trigger the master warning light, a MFD warning, and a beeper (plus an additional beeper if you run the headlamps in malfunction mode) and even the dealer can't cancel all this visual and aural noise until the system is repaired. I had to drive 150 miles before I had everything back to normal.

NOTE: Reinitializing the driver window and the HID light leveler IS necessary if the 12v battery power is interupted.

    So long, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I need to reinitialize my 04 Prius HID light leveler because of replaced 12 volt battery. Can someone tell me how to identify terminals #4 and #8 on the diagnostic connector (which I could find) so I can jump them per the instructions? Thanks

Really? I have disconnected the 12V battery twice while working on the front seat, and I have never tried to initialize the HID leveler. I have never seen an instruction to do that in the factory manual. They do mention initializing the power window function in any procedure that requires disconnecting the 12V battery.

Now, maybe there's something wrong with the HID system that requires a reset, but that was not provoked by disconnecting the battery.

Pin #8 is on the far left, lower row. Pin #4 is on that row, the fifth pin from the left, or the fourth pin when counting from the right.

Thanks Patrick Wong for the pin locations. Now I don't know if reinitializing self leveling is necessary, as Patrick Wong and Dogfriend say it is not, and rfelley says it is necessary. Is there a way for me to test my vehicle to see if the leveling is active? My lights seem fine to me.

If your headlights are working normally, then relax and enjoy driving your car.

You can apply weight on the rear of your car (i.e., stand on the rear bumper cover) and see if the HID headlights adjust downwards to compensate for extra load in the back.
