I was able to get the trim rings off without rolling the car.

After going onto the left shoulder he started fishtailing and went across two lanes of traffic. No mention of the median, so I think it's the lanes that were to the car's right (not oncoming), then did a spin as they went into the ditch, which would put a lot of side-g forces on the car, not surprising it would roll, actually more surprising it only rolled onto the roof (stayed upright until the bottom of the ditch). Anything can happen when you fishtail, so it's entirely possible to end up facing the direction you came from in the RHS ditch (speaking from experience on snowy roads in my college days).

That youtube video is great! Life-changing events can happen in a blink of the eye.

That is also how I read it.

I also have first hand experience with this, also from snowy roads in my college days. Except that the car that initially fishtailed on the left shoulder ended up stopped in the RH lane, facing oncoming traffic. And I was the next oncoming traffic.

Thank goodness dad made sure I had good winter tires.

It's annoying that the other driver wasn't cited for inattentive driving, at the least. Presumably your insurance company will make hers pay?

Keep the better tires at the rear. It reduces the chances of fishtailing.

OMG that was what I was going to say!

Also, this is a good example. If someone starts to swerve and is going to run you off the road, let them hit you. If a deer is in front of you, don't save bambi's life. Your insurance, likely won't cover it, and it will be a single driver incident. Which by default means your at fault.

    Only in America...

I recall that in California you must try to avoid an accident with another vehicle no matter who is in the wrong or you bear at least partial responsibility for the resulting accident. So, you can't really win either way.

I'd just hit the brakes so there would be skid marks. Your right though.

    ABS might prevent skid marks.

Glad to hear everyone's ok. it looks like the driver's side has caved in a bit but it's hard to tell in the photos.

WOW! I cannot believe that she wasn't at least sited!

I would guess that she may have been texting to have been that oblivious to her surroundings. Three people that I personally know have been killing in the past 2 years in my town due to using the cell phone while "driving". Two of them (a married couple) died in very similar scenario as you describe above. A car merged into them, and they rolled off the interstate and over a hill. They both were killed upon impact. The driver of the other car also crashed, but walked away.

Also since she wasn't sited, will your insurance company assume this crash was your fault? If so, be prepared for much higher premiums.

Sorry to hear of your crash, but I'm so glad to see that everyone came out well and unhurt! :)

If the other driver was cited a court appearance would be needed to prevent the case from being dismissed. In NJ one has 30 days to file charges with the municipal clerk. Good luck if you want to persue this.

This is why I won't yield. Drifting into my lane? Then we are going to swap paint. My SO saw a car veer to avoid a car which had drifted into its lane -- the car flipped in a ditch (no injury). Screw that. You drift into my lane there will be damage to both cars.

CA law doesn't like it? F them.
