Hey guys, I had bad experience with Ensign Toyota Service Department in Logan, Utah when I sent in my car for 20K service. The technician did not put the engine oil cap and left it on the engine bay. Oil was spread out everywhere on the engine. I then wrote a letter to the service manager and he promised this wont happen again. Here's my old post. http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...errible-experience-ensign-toyota-in-utah.html Today I sent in my car to the same dealer for 25K service and when I drove the car back, I felt very strong smell like oil and found they did the same thing again!!! I drove the car back and talked to their assistant manager. He offered me free oil change for lifetime. (not full service. but I spent $75 on today's service and air filter)... I accepted the coupon. But when I got home, I regretted. I should refuse the offer and ask them for refund because I won't do business with them ever again, even they offered free oil change. But they are the only toyota dealer in the town.
Why not, you just got free oil change for life. I will bring it in every 3000 miles instead of 5000 to get your moneys worth. Just remember to check under the hood before you drive off.
UH...do you want this place to do service on your car??? I sure as hell wouldn't! What will they "forget" next time?
Out of curiosity - if anyone here has the knowledge: does leaving the refill cap off for short periods of time cause any damage to the engine?
It's sure gonna make a mess, but whether or not any real damage occurs will depend on how much oil is lost. If you lost more than a quart then I think there would be a real possibility of damage occurring. Perhaps the OP could let us know how much was lost if he checked the dip-stick after the event. (which btw is something that I would definitely have done if it happened to me).
Depends on the engine and how the baffles are arranged inside the valve cover. I have heard of other engines (not Prius) getting trashed because they lost too much oil after the cap was left off. It makes a huge mess, if nothing else.
Ok that would have been a relief. Definitely no damage, just a mess and a loss of faith in the dealerships workshop.
A missing cap would not affect oil pressure. It would potentially affect the air/fuel ratio, resulting in a lean mixture.
free oil changes for life?? hell ya i take it... after they steam clean my engine compartment. all i can say if, on EVERY oil change from here on out, if you dont check personally to see if the oil cap is on before leaving, then that is your fault.
What Dave wrote. Always check the oil level yourself before driving away from every oil change, no matter who performs it. Then you will catch stupid mistakes before they become messy or expensive.
