I'm getting no further with Toyota. There's a case worker assigned to this, who's pleasant and calls me. However, when I asked him whether there have been other reports of this problem, he said he doesn't know of any. So I told him that I personally know of at least three others, and there must have been others reports in the database -- don't they maintain a database? He said that he doesn't go into the database. So I asked him how would he possibly be able to resolve a problem if he doesn't check the database to see whether others have had the same problem and whether there's a solution. He told me that his job isn't to resolve the problem but to work with the dealer and help the dealer solve the customer's problems! He says that the engineers use the database and that if there's a recurring problem they would create a special bulletin -- but there isn't one on that right now.

He said I should call the service manager Carrie so-and-so at the dealer because she told me to call or visit. I asked him what can they do if they have already looked at it, can't reproduce the problem, and don't know how to solve it. Somebody from the dealer had already called me and I thought it was the same person, and she just asked me whether I was satisfied with my service. I told her that no, because my problem wasn't resolved, then had to explain from the beginning what it was. Well, apparently it wasn't the same person, so he advised me again to give her a call. So I tried to call this Carrie but was unable to get hold of her.

I don't get this. How can the customer satisfaction representatives, or whoever they are, satisfy the customer if they don't have access to the proper resources to help resolve a problem? Apparently they don't get into the technical details. So shouldn't they be coordinating with the technical people on this? I believe the dealer had called Toyota on this issue, so there must be a record of it somewhere!

Well may be experiencing something similar now myself. Tonight when I left work, I noticed the Freeway/Thruway exits which usually populate did not show any data.

Generally it will show the near exit numbers and approximate minutes to each. But the moving icon was working but not the side menu's. So I tried to access the SAT radio and that was inoperative. In fact everything I did, seemed to be in time delay. So I pulled the car over and turned off and on, and it came back up, but the side menu's again were not working. I could however get into the SAT, and CD.

So something is going on here and not exactly as you described but something is askew!

So will be checking the DVD tomorrow AM in the daylight and see if the DVD looks ok?

More to come once I see what I can find out.

Have any of you who have reported these problems received any resolution? Although Toyota customer service and the local dealer have called me a number of times, nobody seems to have come up with any type of solution, since they can't replicate the problem.

I'd basically given up because I hadn't had the problem in a long time and thought that maybe it just resolved itself, but last Monday, while I was on the way to the airport for a business trip, the message came on again. This time, it didn't happen when I first turned on the car. I was listening to a CD when there was a sudden inerruption, the screen went blank, and then the message appeared. The screen was frozen for about 5 or 10 minutes, then the system finally rebooted itself, which took several more minutes.

I'd use my phone's video feature to video record the DVD read failure. If you record the failure 2x ... all the better. Show them a video of your mfd having a misread, & that'll force them to swap it out ... whether it's a bad DVD or the hardware, when you show PROOF of an intermittent failure, it's harder for them to stand there looking dumb/shrugging their shoulders.
    ;)

That said, I've notice on some DVD map copies, it takes several minutes for the data to load ... and sometimes the disk will hicup days or weeks after install, so to speek ... meaning it'll hesitate prior to loading / reading. I bring that up to point out it may simply be (more likely) a bad disk.

I did take a picture of the message and printed it out for them.
It usually happens when I'm in a hurry to get somewhere and can't stop to record everything that happens (especially since nothing happens for the first several minutes except that the screen is frozen with the message on it). And, when it does happen, it doesn't last long enough for me to get to the dealer to show it happening.

90% of the time it works perfectly. The navigation system starts right up and there is no delay in loading. And there doesn't seem to be any way to predict when it is more likely to happen. At first I thought it was only happening when the weather is cold -- but recently it's been much colder and has only happened once (and it wasn't particularly cold that day).

As I said, I thought the problem had gone away by itself but then it happened again -- after about a month.

    PriusRos,

One thing another poster mentioned was to "Delete Previous Destinations" and I did that, for what it was worth and it has not happened to me again....The Freezing of the display, basically like the system is hung!

I could not get anything and there was a 5 minute pause like it was frozen so gave it a try and low and behold it has been working ever since....

I don't know what or how it relates but you could give it a try???

Nothing yet from Toyota on it...They asked me to eject and reload the disk as well....

Will keep ya posted if I hear anything as well.

I'm wondering whether anybody has resolved this problem.

After a lot of back and forth with the dealer they decided they would first try giving me an updated DVD to see whether that solved the problem. Well, this was nice, because I now have the newest map. However, the problem came back almost immediately. In fact, since acquiring the new disc, the problem occurs almost daily -- and the screen is frozen even longer before reseting itself than before -- I'm talking 5 to 20 minutes. Sometimes the problem message appears immediately when I start the car and other times it will occur several minutes after I start driving. A new twist is that sometimes the map will be displayed but it isn't actually showing the current location and thinks it's still where it was when the system hung up. When these things are going on, the voice recognition system, audio system, bluetooth, etc don't work either.

As the final resort, the dealer agreed to order a new navigation unit for me -- this was about 10 days ago and it still hasn't come in. Hopefully, it will come in soon and swapping out the unit will fix the problem.

Good, I'm glad they are finally doing the right thing. Better late than never, hope it works when they get the new one in. I bet it will be fine.

It should be very easy Bill. If you have the Nav System manual it will tell you how, or the parts guy at the dealer should do it for you for free. There are two slots, one for your music CDs and one for the Nav disk. You just eject the Nav Disk and put in the new one. On my newer version you push Info-Phone, Map Data, then DVD to eject; put in the new one and push Close. Yours is probably similar.

One question that comes to mind, do you really want to? If your maps are inaccurate you may find the new disk has the same problems. I would suggest having a dealer show you a Nav system with the updated disk and check it out before you buy a new one, they are over priced and quite expensive for what you get.

I am glad I found this priuschat forum. I had the same problem as you PriusRos. Whenever the Nav is frozen all other functions (music from the radio or cd, phone bluetooth, voice command, etc) are stuck too. It sometimes resets by itself on the fly or is reset after my next restart of the vehicle.

Any updates from your end after they replaced your unit?

After two visits (in a span of one week) to Toyota Melody (San Bruno CA) they finally saw the problem and determined that it is a head unit issue. They will replace the head unit free of charge since my car is still under warranty. They ordered the head unit which will take 5-10 working days. Once it arrives they will call me to service/replace it and I'll update you guys.

Yes, once they swapped out the unit, the problem was solved. They also gave me an updated DVD, which was a bonus. Everything has been working fine since then -- it's been years now.
