    Jay,

I'm on the waiting list for a 2010 Prius. If you come out with a DashDAQ that provides the information that a hybrid owner wants I will be ordering just as soon as I get my car.

By the way, is the unit upgradable? If I bought one now, and you came out with the software for a Prius, would I be able to upgrade when I got my Prius.

    Thanks,
    Gary

It seems to me that both the CanView and the DashDAQ offer completely different things.

The CanView is, at the end of the day, a way to enable DIY conversion of a Prius to a PHEV. It's by no means necessary but is a great way to keep an eye on what's going on inside your car.

Sure, the graphics aren't all that great but it's a very solid piece of kit - and the code is updated quite regularly. Does it require a knowlege of code? No, not really. I'm not particularly technical but I do have a willingness to learn. That made the Canview the best product for me.

If you want a more end-user device and don't want to do a PHEV conversion then I could see the DashDAQ maybe being more enticing. However, a scangague is cheaper - and at the end of the day a Dash DAQ could just be another encouraging thing to steal for an auto criminal...

It's horses for courses at the end of the day. I can see merit in all three...

    aminorjourney,

At this point in time it is unclear just what capabilities and possibilities the
DashDAQ has and can offer to Prius drivers.

The DashDAQ poster said that the unit was primarily developed for the
"performance" market. If you dig aroud in their site, you'll find that they've
customized the outputs for many marques. There is reason to believe that
they can do the same for the Prius. For all we know, with their in-house
capabilities, the Prius specific data will figuretively fall right out of the OBD
    plug.

Right now, only one thing is needed for this no-cost to anybody inquiry to
    move forward.

I repeat only one, simple thing is needed.

And that is for a Michigan member to go by the DashDAQ facility in Ann
Arbor, and let them take a look at the OBD data stream.

I am beginning to have disquieting suspicions that the lethargy and ennui
that has affected the Detroit 3 for Lo! these many years, may may have
spread to the populace of the whole state...

The canbus data dashdaq uses is free
its really not a lot te reseach there

only the added gps and speciality of the product make's it go up to 1000 dollars

But the Prius data is not just free standard info
also some data needs to be requested and is not just being transmitted on the canbus
this means research and therefor a more expensive device.

the canview will also do PHEV relay switching someting the DashDAQ will never do.

You might want to talk to the people in this thread

We might also want to supply them with the OBD-II commands specific to the Prius that we know about. (See other SG-II threads, etc.)

This thread is approaching one year in age and I was wondering if there was any progress made on getting anyone out in Michigan to swing by Ann Arbor to assist Drewtech in teching out a Prius for their DashDAQ product.?

    Creaky,

Thanks for giving this thread a bump.

There has been no movement on this idea over the past year. :(

The manufacturer/programmer is waiting for a Prius driver to come by
so that they can run some data retrieval kind of stuff -- I'm not all that
savvy on these things -- to see what they can do to make the unit more
    Prius/hybrid specific.

So, once again I make this appeal:

Is there anyone in an easy drive's distance from Ann Arbor, MI that can
call the DashDAQ folks and make an appointment to drop by there so
they can have a look. Any movement on this seems to now be in the
    Gen III drivers court.

(In reality, things may now be somewhat complicated. In that the
ScanGauge XGauges work on the Gen II, but not on the Gen III, which
ever model gets looked at, the other may be out of luck as to
compatibility should DashDAQ take on the challenge.)

Here's the info to make an appointment:

How about DashHawk - anyone know anything about it? Just saw it on the Sigma site and started prowling around their website (DashHawk Vehicle Information Display). I have a ScanGaugeII on my Christmas list but the DashHawk looks pretty spiffy too.

I saw that a couple of years ago. First impressions suggested several advantages over ScanGauge:

    • Many more generic engine parameters available
    • Customizable displays
    • Companion PC software with USB interface
    • Limited data logging (still unavailable with SG)
Its most glaring limitation is lack of Prius-specific parameters. The search for those is presumably what motivated Rokeby to post in the first place. This shortcoming and the price would combine to be a show-stopper for me.

    JimboK,

You've hit the nail on its head. For both the DashDAQ and the Dash
Hawk the deadly down-side are their lack of hybrid/Prius specific
parameters. There seems to be at least a willingness by the DashDAQ
folks to look into the matter if we can just get a car to them for a
    look-see.

The ScanGauge is a very capable unit. Its programmable XGauge
feature gives access to a wide range of hybrid only parameters. It's
down-side is its appearance; the clunky box and the Atari-like display,
    definitely old school.

I can't get to Ann Arbor. But I know we have members that live near or
travel there. OK, everybody has a life. Still, I'm frustrated by this not
getting anywhere. This unit would look so much better on the dash of
a Gen II. It would look especially good in a Gen III. Here's the site to
    get a look:

    DashDAQ - Features

When I first posted on this almost a year ago, The Prius was the only
hybrid generally available. Now there are the Honda Insight II and the
Ford Fusion. The market for a hybrid parameter capable after-market
gauge package is growing, and will get bigger. It seems to me that it
would be well worth the little effort it would take to help move
    DashDAQ in this direction.

From reading on the DashDAQ site, cars from different makers have
differing data sets. To be responsive to the "performance" market,
DashDAQ has done the work to retrieve the data for different
"performance" cars. If the Prius community gets to them first, we can
be their entry into the growing hybrid market.

Road trip to Ann Arbor anyone?

Thanks Jimbo, that's what I wasn't clear on - whether or not the device needed to know anything vehicle specific or not. Guess I'd better start reading up on ScanGaugeII a bit more.

Not sure if this is what you have been waiting for or not but I just did a search for "Prius" on the DashDAQ forum and found a post stating they recently got support for hybrid vehicles in the last firmware version.

More interesting, a second post by John@Drewtech regarding the available Prius specific signals (be sure to scroll through the list as it is much longer than it looks). I would post the link directly but I have yet to meet PriusChats 5 post minimum prereqs for link posting so you'll have to do a search there on your own (just type "Prius" in the search bar).

Here are the basics of the post by John@Drewtech:

He includes a lengthy scrolling list of signals too long to include here. Let me know if this helps.

There still appears to be none of the hybrid-specific parameters some of us yearn for: HV battery current and voltage; MG1 & MG2 RPM; temperatures of MG1, MG2, HV battery, and inverters; etc.

Since I am new to the use of Scanguage II and such devices when used to maximize mileage, read and clear codes, etc, etc...are the still unsupported hybrid-specific parameters the ones necessary for maximizing mileage on the DashDAQ or are the DashDAQs newly supported signals the same ones most used for such purposes when using the ScanGuage? In other words, now that it supports the Prius, how is the DashDAQ/Scanguage II available signal comparison (beside the obvious price differential) in terms of mileage maximization purposes and what specific signals would those be? It sounds like it isn't quite perfect yet, but is the DashDAQ now a prettier, more expensive Scanguage II for mileage purposes? Thanks!

I wouldn't consider the hybrid-specific parameters necessary, just helpful.

There is a point of diminishing returns. The marginal improvement in fuel economy that CAN-View might provide won't offset its cost. I didn't buy it for that and didn't expect that. SG is the best bang for the buck in that regard, though if that is one's only goal, I still doubt it would pay off. The skilled operator can do much to maximize fuel economy with no added instrumentation.

Those of us who add instrumentation usually are looking for other things as well, such as other operating indicators (like coolant temperature or 12 battery voltage), a multitude of trip readings like SG provides, the ability to retrieve and clear DTCs, and an appeal to our inner nerd. ;) I got CAN-View because of the complete package, which for it also includes integration with the MFD and virtually unlimited data logging via a laptop.

As for this device, I don't seen anything in this latest list of parameters that would help with maximizing mileage. It looks like it's geared more toward ... well, gearheads. Prettier and more expensive, yes. But in terms of fuel economy-maximizing functionality, it still doesn't approach CAN-View or SG with X-gauges.

Just what I needed to know, thanks for the clarification. I can't claim to be a skilled operator yet but I hope to learn how to get my 2006 Prius to average in the 50s consistently if possible so I'll give the Scangauge a try.:)

Can it read ignition advance (IGN in ScanGuage) and injector timing? (the latter is probably the most useful single mileage improving parameter. See Hobbit's thread on Clean MPG for details.

Yes especially the temperatures are important to watch if we grill block. Still waiting ... :(
