2010 Prius Grill Blocking strategy

Unfortunately it can not. I think it must have a sensor to tell if it's to hot, cold would never be a problem for it. There may be a way to read it using the Xguage feature on the scan gauge but no one knows the coding for the Gen3 yet. I agree with you I won't block the upper either.

 

Has anyone been able to attach anything behind the grill to block the airflow?

 

Originally I wanted to do that but couldn't find an easy or hard way for that matter. It would have required removing many parts. And then I didn't want to block too much. At least this way, I could remove some of the blocking if I felt the car getting too hot.

 

Is monitoring the engine coolant temp reading on the Scanguage sufficient or do I actually need to program an Xguage to get the actual engine temp?

 

I was able to get a piece off the top today, but still it was to hard to get my arm down there
pick up some 1/2 in pipe insulation today. 89 cents for a 6 ft piece

What the scan gauge reads for engine coolant temperature is just fine. What is really needed is a way to monitor inverter coolant temperature. Then we could block the whole grill (upper and lower) without fear.

 

From the inside or the outside?

 

I wonder if R7 could tell us that information using TechStream?

Winter temps (now thru March) rarely get over 40. Deep winter hangs out in 20's and with the occasional arctic blast. Going with 100% lower, 1/2 inch foam. No ScanGauge but as long as I leave the top open there shouldn't be a problem?

 

i do 100% as soon as temps hit 50º been doing it for 5 years....hopefully, i be ok

 

I think if the top is open you will be OK till spring. BTW I think the ScanGaugeII is on sale for $137 or so.

 

Do any of you Grillblockers use a garland or wreath at this time of year to block your grill???

 

I removed the sheild that is above the radiator close to the hood latch (3 pop out plastic rivits). Then I slipped a piece of carpet down the slot onto the front of the radiator, I attached 2 wires like cabletyes to hold it in place, it covers about 50% of the radiator. Then I replaced the shield.

I am not really happy with this. I want more blockage and easier ability to adjust it if I get a warmer day. I will keep working on it.

I recommend you undo your cardboard block. If your blocking the top half of the radiator your really blocking all of the inverter radiator, this you do not want to do. I would recommend the pipe insulation method as being easier to implement and you can selectively remove pieces to account for temperature changes.

I was able to to get the top off but could not get my hand there to do anything

 

Went ahead and blocked the lower grill 99% today.
You'll notice the engine block heater plug in the upper right corner.
I don't think it looks that bad...

 

Looks good. After the first snow and sanding it will all blend in nicely.

So your saying on Gen III block lower grill. My temps are between 41 to 65 most of the time.
