    Really? I've always felt that the Civic was gutless in non-SiR (Si for US) form. The latest iteration feels a lot better (now that it finally has i-VTEC)

    Because it's North America?

    Thats what my wife does and at 46mpg, it's still more than twice the 21mpg she was getting in her van.

    I got rid of a thirsty V8 a quarter century ago, and have refused to even consider anything larger than 4 cylinders ever since.

    The sluggish one was the 88 HP 2.3L Ford, and even that had all the power I really needed at that time. It's power would still be fine today, if not for the growing intolerance of other traffic, the "get there now, get the **** out of my way" attitude.

    Well, it's been a while I got rid of my 02 Civic but don't recall having to press its gas pedal really hard to avoid people behind me to get mad when leaving from a stop... that happens with my Prius all the time... :eek:

    I get up to speed in power mode and try to keep it in eoc mode on the gauge. If that is too hard to keep in that range because of the sensitive pedal pressure, i switch to eco keep the posted speed limit. You will always have that idiot passing or on your tail. On your tail, PWR mode and off you go

    I've had my Prius four weeks and I traded in an 02 Civic for it. I agree; the Civic was peppier but mine was a Civic HX. 2 door, no AC, no nothing, 2400 lb. curb weight, and a CVT. Engine was the same as the EX - 117 HP. The Prius offers a bit more room and a more refined feel. People are a bit more mellow in the SF Bay Area so I haven't run into too many problems here. There is an image thing with the Prius though; people who wouldn't get impatient with another car traveling at the same speed get impatient with a Prius.

    Do you mean that Prius get in the way of people who drive penis extensions?

    Maybe it's people who just automatically drive closer to a Prius. I've P&G'd in an 80s Chevy CK1500 and the folks behind me stayed behind me rather than "impatiently" overtaking like they do when I'm in the Prius.

    OK, stupid question but I'm a newbie, please forgive.

    Only two days in with the car, but not sure I'm clear on this driving mode selection thing. I haven't ever selected anything; I just turn the car on and drive, and it appears as if the car is in "ECO" mode. Is that the "default" mode if you don't press either the E/V, ECO, or Power button? And does it automatically just operate in that mode all the time unless you select one of the others?

    If you select Power Mode, does it stay in that mode until otherwise changed as well?

    Eco and Pwr mode buttons are toggles. If the dash says eco, hit eco again to go to normal. Or hit pwr to switch from eco to pwr. Both modes are retained when you power down.

    Thanks - but what is "normal" mode? Is that yet another mode different from the other three? Sorry this is just confusing the heck out of me!

    Normal mode is when you're not in EV, ECO, or Power Modes. You will see no green icon at all on top of the speedometer readout. I didn't know that until a week after owning the Prius.

    PWR doesn't stay on after shut down. Only ECO Mode.

    If nothing is showing on the dashboard, you're in "normal" mode. If you press any of the buttons, you will see the corresponding "EV", "ECO" or "PWR" icon illuminate on the dashboard.

    If you shut down in ECO Mode, it will remember it for next time. IF you shut down in EV Drive or PWR mode, it will default to "normal" mode the next time you start the car.

    Lemme ask this: If you bring the HSI up to the high end of the
    "fat bar", just shy of the red PWR region, is that "enough"
    acceleration for most situations? If not, how far into the red
    produces something to consider adequate?
    .
    I'm still seeing all this confusion over the mode buttons and
    people thinking they actually change how fast the car *can*
    accelerate. Try watching the HSI to monitor what's really going
    on, and then try keeping it in your chosen "launch" sweet spot
    in different pwr/eco settings -- and note how all it affects is
    where your foot needs to be, that's all.
    .
    A read through this could also help if you haven't already, but it
    sounds like you want to be a bit higher than my suggested ranges.
    That doesn't create a reason to not use the HSI beneficially, though.
